Certified Peer Specialist
Homeward Bound Inc., a non-profit agency that treats individuals with mental health and substance use issues, is looking for peer specialists to work in our outpatient location.
Candidates will have some sort of personal lived experience with mental health or substance use issues.
Responsibilities:
– Provide support and guidance to individuals with behavioral health challenges
– Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to encourage and empower individuals in their recovery journey
– Assist peers in developing and implementing personalized recovery plans
-Contact each assigned peer on a weekly basis and more often as needed
– Conduct group sessions to assist with life skills, medication management, and case management
– Collaborate with other members of the treatment team to ensure comprehensive care
– Provide crisis intervention and support during times of acute distress
– Assist individuals in accessing resources and services both in Homeward Bound and in the community
– Maintain accurate and confidential documentation of interactions with peers
-De-escalate peers in crises situations as needed
-Provide transportation to peers who need assistance in attending appointments and other obligations
-Meet with peers to discuss life skill issues such as communicating housing concerns, budgeting, and employment needs
-Be proficient in assisting individuals who need help obtaining their social security card, birth certificate, drivers license, and other identity documents
-Be willing to advocate for peers and attend court with them and work with CPS case workers as needed
-Utilize a person-centered approach with each peer and support their recovery path including supporting prescribed medication-assisted treatment as well as prescribed psychiatric medication
-Strive towards ongoingly learning more about the symptoms that indivduals experience as part of their diagnoses
– Current certification as a mental health peer specialist or recovery support peer specialist or willingness to obtain certification within a specified timeframe
– Have the ability to establish rapport and build trusting relationships with peers
– Develop a knowledge of community resources and services for individuals with behavioral health needs
– Have the ability to maintain professional boundaries and adhere to ethical guidelines
-Have a working understanding of trauma-informed care
Candidates must have a current driver’s license, active liability insurance, and evidence of a high school diploma or GED.
