The Council on Recovery is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to keep our community healthy, productive, and safe by providing services and information to all who may be adversely affected by alcohol, drugs, and related issues.

 

As a Recovery Support Peer Specialist, you will be providing community-based services to anyone over the age of 18 who resides in Harris County who identifies with a substance use disorder, including a mental health condition, aspires to initiate or maintain their recovery, and improve their lives.   In this role, you will be able to support and walk alongside participants, removing barriers and empowering them on their recovery journey. Additionally, you will also meet people where they are in their recovery and support them on their chosen path of recovery.

 

This position (RSPS) provides peer-based support to individuals seeking or maintaining recovery from substance use. This role assists individuals in navigating resources, building recovery capital, and developing the skills needed to achieve independence, resilience, and sustained recovery. The RSPS uses lived experience, recovery tools, and professional training to empower peers and connect them with community supports to sustain their self-identified recovery goals.

Requirements

Must carry a full RSPS Certification with the Texas Certification Board
High School Diploma/GED required; Associate’s Degree in a behavioral health field preferred, but not required
Must have a minimum of 2 years of lived experience in recovery from a substance use disorder
Minimum of 1 year experience working as a Recovery Coach or Peer Recovery Specialist
Bilingual preferred but not required
Experience facilitating groups to vulnerable populations
Strong organizational, time management, and communication (written, reading, verbal, and communication skills
Experience working independently and collaboratively as part of a team
Skilled with computers, Virtual/Video platforms, Tech Savvy, Microsoft Office Suite is a must, i.e., Word, Excel
Local travel required, must have reliable transportation
Valid Texas driver’s license and current proof of insurance

Preferred Experience

Working knowledge of community resources and ability to develop relationships with outside agencies
Experience in the use of Motivational Interviewing Techniques
Familiar with the Stages of Change and Phases of Recovery
Knowledgeable of the HHSC Clinical Management system, aka (CMBHS), is a plus
Assisting with issues that may impede day-to-day functioning and progress in working toward recovery
Accompanying individuals through new environments, services, and systems when appropriate and requested
Building on an individual’s strengths, needs, interests, and capabilities to improve recovery capital
