Healthy Community Collaborative (HCC) Mental Health Peer Support Specialist 

Supports individuals with issues related to mental health, psychological trauma, or substance use drawing from their own lived experience to help guide others through their recovery journey.  Note:  This is NOT an office-based position. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Must be a Certified Mental Health Peer Support Specialist or be eligible to receive this certification within the first 90 days of employment.  MHPS requirements include a High School Diploma or GED, at least 18 years of age or older, have a primary diagnosis of a target population mental health disorder with at least one year of cumulative mental health services, and be able and willing to publicly identify as a person living in recovery from a mental health disorder.  Previous work experience in mental health services and criminal justice preferred. Must have good written and verbal communication skills and be computer literate.  Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License, meet insurance criteria, and be able to pass all applicable state and agency training.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

–  Responds to warm phone calls from clients reaching out to talk

–  Provides referrals to assist with unmet needs

–  Models effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on own recovery experience

–  Supporting clients in advocating for themselves

–  Interacts genuinely with persons waiting in the lobby for scheduled appointments answering various questions

–  Street outreach and HMIS assessor

SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to HCC Program Manager 

Supervises: N/A

–  Ability to communicate effectively with clients, agency staff, and legal staff involved in client’s mental health treatment

–  Must be able to cope with frustration, work non-judgmentally with clients, and respond to changing needs of clients

–  Must be able to work both independently as well as part of the treatment team

–  Ability to complete clinical documentation on time

–  Must have good phone, typing, and basic computer skills

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

–  Ability to communicate effectively with clients, agency staff, and legal staff involved in client’s mental health treatment

AMOUNT OF TRAVEL:  80% of the time as a result of mobile outreach/street outreach
