Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) – Supplemental

The MHPS Specialty Training is an extensive curriculum approved by HHSC. After completing the course and passing the final knowledge assessment, students will be eligible to apply for certification as a Texas Certified Mental Health Peer Specialist through the Texas Certification Board.

The MHPS (Mental Health Peer Specialist) Specialty Training offers a tailored curriculum aimed at equipping individuals with the essential abilities and insights to adeptly assist those facing mental health challenges on their path to recovery. This program is specifically crafted for individuals who have personally encountered mental health issues and aspire to leverage their unique experiences to bring about positive transformations in the lives of others.

Comprehensive overview of peer specialist work, including historical context and foundations.

Values and ethics guiding peer specialists, emphasizing language’s impact in peer specialist practice.

Five recovery process stages and their relevance to peer specialist practice, incorporating active listening, holding space, and sharing personal experiences to support others.

Essential skills: active listening, holding space, group facilitation, promoting self-help, and understanding federal and state mental health systems’ impact on peer specialists.

Significance of the environment in mental health, problem-solving approaches, managing fear, considering the whole person in peer specialist practice.

Maintaining ethical boundaries, being an effective change agent, navigating power dynamics, and addressing conflicts with integrity.
